News and quotes SS 13 (Beyond Borders 2)

Exemplifying the spirit of the Central European Rally, the 24.33km Beyond Borders weaves through the border between Austria and Germany for the second and final time for the World Rally Championship crews. In far more temperate conditions than the morning pass the crews were free to push a little harder on dry asphalt and it was Sébastien Ogier who claimed the stage win, extending his advantage over Ott Tänak in their battle for the lead.

#9 Andreas Mikkelsen (NOR) / Torstein Eriksen (NOR) Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid

“We are trying to improve the car. It’s getting better step-by-step. There are some parts I wish I could have which got destroyed yesterday – I can only thank myself! For some reason I didn’t have hybrid in the beginning now in the first acceleration from the start line. I don’t know why it didn’t work then suddenly it came back. Very strange.”

#19 Jourdan Serderidis (GRE) / Frédéric Miclotte (BEL) Ford Puma Rally1 (non-Hybrid)

“I’m so lucky to do that kind of a stage – it’s so nice, so fun.”

#13 Grégoire Munster (LUX) / Louis Louka (BEL), Ford Puma Rally1 Hybrid

“We’re trying things out a bit like a big testing, then we tried one thing now it wasn’t working but at least now we know we need to go other direction. One thing with the damper – it’s helping but in the wrong moment.”

#5 Sami Pajari (FIN) / Enni Mälkönen (FIN), Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid

“(Pushing) a little bit maybe in some places but also it’s quite different type of a condition and driving compared to morning, it’s much more clean, dry condition, so it’s let’s say not only about the slippy places but also now you need to be confident to push on the high speeds. Still trying to be clean and not to rush too much but at least it’s really nice and enjoyable anyway. It’s quite cool.”

#18 Takamoto Katsuta (JPN) / Aaron Johnson (IRL), Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid

“Very clean. Just clean, nothing so exciting to say, I mean I just try to do my job.”

#33 Elfyn Evans (GBR) / Scott Martin (GBR), Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid

“It’s just in the dry condition, obviously a lot of markings have improved a lot.  A bit of hesitations here or there, should learn to ignore what the old man (father Gwyndaf Evans, former British rally champion now on Elfyn’s gravel crew) says sometimes. Obviously he’s doing my gravel notes, obviously you have to trust what they say to a point but of course the conditions are evolving so much you have to take everything with a pinch of salt but it’s not always easy to do.”

#8 Ott Tänak (EST) / Martin Järveoja (EST), Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid

“I guess it’s just so racy and over the crests I just don’t have a racy enough car at the moment.”

#17 Sébastien Ogier (FRA) / Vincent Landais (FRA), Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid

“We had to react, he was fast in the previous one so we had to be fast in this one. It was a nice stage, pretty good condition with the drier road and we enjoyed it.”

#11 Thierry Neuville (BEL) / Martijn Wydaeghe (BEL), Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid

“I mean obviously like we said before disappointed (not to be leading the rally). But it’s not the end in the fight for the championship. We are still on course. Obviously it’s frustrating for sure because back on Tarmac we wanted of course to have a good result but on the other hand we are thinking a lot about finishing the rally first.”

#22 Nikolay Gryazin (BUL) / Konstantin Aleksandrov (ANA), Citroën C3 Rally2

“It was quite flow and enjoy so it was quite okay.”

#20 Oliver Solberg (SWE) / Elliott Edmondson (GBR), Škoda Fabia RS Rally2

“I should have had these settings in the morning when it was slippery and these settings you know and the morning settings could have worked now. That’s how it is.”
